| There is a dramatic scene in the famous film Cabaret where a young blond boy sings a rousing and poignant song. German men and women are quietly enjoying a beautiful summer's day as they sip their wine and beer in the garden of a German 'bierkeller'. The song arouses them from their inactivity and as the song comes to its climax, the entire tavern is standing proudly, their arms outstretched in joyful salute |

| This song can help us to understand the colourful and shocking world of fascism. The song is filled with hope and expectation. The sun, the stag and the branch of the linden tree remind us of a world that knows no pain. The baby is sleeping softly in his cradle and the Rhine is filled with gold. What a happy world! And yet we sense something rather menacing and macabre. 'The morning will come when the world is mine' sings our handsome, blue-eyed soldier boy. Tomorrow belongs to me. Precisely who will own this world, we might ask? The answer to this disturbing question is immediately answered by the very next scene in the film. Fritz is madly in love with a beautiful woman, Natalia, and he begs her to marry him. She declines his imploring request and drives away in her expensive motor car. Fritz sprints after and she brings the car to a halt. Desperately he pleads with her, 'Why won't you marry me?' 'Don't you see what is happening in Germany today?' she says, 'I am a Jew. You are not.' And so Natalia drives away, tearful and sad. As a Jewish woman, Natalia does not belong; her race is inappropriate! The Nazis believed that only the racially pure would inherit this future paradise of summery scenes and golden rivers. Jews, gypsies, blacks and the mentally-handicapped would be elimated; such Untermenschen or sub-humans would be destroyed |
