It often comes as a shock to some people just how much money some football players are earning.
Alan Shearer is now worth 17 million and David Beckham is reported to have earned about seven million pounds last year. His salary at Manchester United is only a part of his total earnings; he has extremely lucrative contracts with Adidas and Brylcream which top up his earnings to an acceptable level. Becks owns seven cars including a custom built Ferrari, a Porshe 911, a Range Rover and a Jaguar.
David and his wife Victoria own a 2.3 million pound mansion in Hertfordshire and a 450,000 pound flat in Alderley Edge. When they go shopping, they can buy pretty much what they like and it is unlikely that they shop in Kwik Save or Somerfield. It’s a pretty safe bet that they make ends meet. Some football players are very shrewd with their cash and are able to retire at a young age with vast fortunes. Others are not so circumspect. George Best summed up his attitude to money and life when he remarked: “ I spent a lot of my money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.”
